Colic in babies and its homeopathic treatment

When my son was a baby he suffered from colic and  I remember how lucky I was to have homeopathic remedies on hand to allievate his pain. It can be very distressing for parents to see their little ones in such pain and feel helpless as to how to help them. Its very stressful for all involved and the sleepless nights can take their toll.

Colic is a distressing condition common in infants. It is associated with intestinal disorders which result in sharp tummy pains or spasms. During this pain the baby may arch the back or draw its legs up to the stomach. The abdomen can be extended and hard and they may pass wind. After the colic epsode the infant may burp and have a bowel movement.

How can Homeopathy help an infant with colic?

Homeopathic treatment is highly effective in the treatment of simple colic, whether in infants, children or adults. The aim of Homeopathy is to not only to relieve the pain but to strengthen the babies immature digestive system. After selecting a remedy that is appropriate to the babies symptoms, homeopathic treatment will support the child’s developement and healing.

Homopathic remedies

There are many remedies that can treat colic and the following are some remedies that can be appropriate if the symptoms fit.

Colocynthis

Indications for this remedy is where the infant will draw its legs upwards and inwards with the pain. The pain is severe and comes in waves. The abdomen is bloated. The infant seems better when pressure is applied to the stomach such as when it is held over the shoulder. The infant is also better for passing a stool. The infant may be very irritable and bad tempered.

Dioscorea

Indications for this remedy are when the baby arches its back and stretches its legs out with the pain. There can be rumbling and wind in the tummy. The baby likes to be held upright.

Chamomilla

Indications for this remedy is where the baby is extremely irritable and screams with the pain. They can be restless and dont know what they want. It is very difficult for the parents to pacify the baby and carrying the baby is the only thing that bring temporary relief. Nappies can be offensive, stools can be green and smell of rotten eggs. One cheek of the face may be hot and swollen.

While homeopathic remedies are very effective in treating colic, breast feeding mothers should examine their own diet as some foods can affect the infant. Those include dairy products, coffee, tea, alcohol, peppers, onions, garlic, cabbage, oranges and grapes. Some bottle fed babies are allergic to cow’s milk and will do well on other types of formula. Seek advice if you suspect this maybe the case.

It is important to have the baby checked out by their doctor to rule out any serious underlying issues.
